|Judi Bourque-Olmstead, owner and professional pet groomer and stylist, welcomes you to PAWSITIVELY PURRFECT PET GROOMING. Judi has been grooming since 1986 and got her start in the North Shore area of Massachusetts and groomed there until moving to Vermont when she married Vermonter Dan Olmstead. Judi had apprenticed under two different groomers while in Mass., one of which was a show groomer.
In Feb, 1995, she opened her grooming shop business on Washington St. in Brattleboro. The business was relocated to it's current location in 3/97 when Judi and husband Dan completed renovations and moved into their new property on RTE 9 in Marlboro, VT. The new shop location allowed for a larger, self contained grooming shop with retail, the Olmstead residence and barns for their equine family on the property.
Judi and Dan's "children" include nine horses and ponies (Kessie, Betsy, Molly, Penny, Sasha, Bizaina, and Buck, Bobcat and Sammy) , one Toy Poodle (Tristen), four house kitties (Pocahontas, Muffin, Phoebe and Tawny) and one cockateil (Custer). Judi has been a "horsewoman" since age 9 and a lifelong animal lover. Dan has become very accustomed to pet care since marrying Judi.
Judi's other past and/or current professions, some of which were concurrent with her Grooming career, were as an Emergency Medical Technician - A (7 years MA and Nationally registered), Medical Assistant (diploma)-Emergency Walk-In, Tour Guide for a major travel company, Human Services Professional for DMH and DMR vendors (Mass and VT), and her on-going Bellydance career since 1974. Judi also teaches bellydance at her home professional studio in Marlboro and in Brattleboro Vermont and continues her nightclub career in New England. Please visit her BELLYDANCE website at:

Professional pet grooming (now referred to as Canine/Feline cosmetology or "pet styling") is a very skilled and time consuming profession. One can compare this profession to human hairdressers and cosmetologists. Both are skilled in knowing correct styling and care of the skin and hair/coat. Unlike humans, however, pets do not always stand still or tolerate certain procedures well (dematting/undercoat removal). It takes great skill, patience, experience and care to groom pets. People don't bite their hairdressers but groomers are sometimes at risk during certain procedures as nail clipping and dematting or due to the nature of some dogs (muzzles can be our best friends, sometimes).
Proper grooming procedures and styling requires time and there are not many shortcuts to achieve a well groomed pet. Grooming operations cannot survive grooming two or three pets/day and groomers need to take proper amounts of time to groom each client's pet especially when the groomer is performing all the procedures from start (pre bath work) to finish (finish clip and scizzoring). When a groomer operates alone doing all of the procedural steps, time is at a premium. I take great pride in my grooming and ask that owners allow me the amount of time I need to groom their pet and other pets that same day so that I can continue to operate. I will not cut corners in grooming procedures on any pet in order to save time or squeeze in another dog that day. Some breeds require more time and precision for grooming than others and much depends of the condition of the pet when it is brought in and how tolerant the dog is for being groomed. All of this adds up to time.
One of the most important parts of the health and well being of the pet is the care of the skin and coat. The skin is the first line of defense in all animals and it's care is crucial to your pet's overall health. Therefore, I, as a professional groomer, encourage and attempt to educate the pet's owner of how to care for and maintain the skin and coat between grooming visits. I carry only the grooming tools and products that I use and can attest to. I will not sell a product to a customer unless it is geared towards the specific coat/skin care of that particular pet. I also instruct the owner how to properly utilize the grooming tools in order to be humane and efficient in home grooming coat care!
